During the Harlem Renasissance of the 1930s and 40s, Alice Barker was a chorus line dancer. The Apollo, Cotton Club, and Zanzibar Club were the hottest places to be, and Alice danced at them all. In fact, you’ve probably heard of some of her partners, like Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.
Alice, now 102-years-old, has never seen herself dance on film. Thanks to Mark Cantor, of Jazz-On-Film, who collects old soundies, that’s all changed. This video of Alice seeing herself for the first time, and truly reliving these moments of her youth, is hard to put into words, it’s best if you check it out for yourself.
